Au Bon Marché is a large department store, which became a luxury store, founded in 1838 and located on the left bank of Paris. It still exists but has been called Le Bon Marché since 1989.
In the field of photography, Au Bon Marché was a distributor, meaning that the department store sold cameras under its own brand that were manufactured by third parties without changing their specifications, but by masking the references to the manufacturer and changing the name of the model, including that of the lens. The cameras sold by Le Bon Marché don't always have a name; they often have to make do with a type (such as a view camera, detective camera) followed by a number or their format.
This small Atom 4.5 x 6 cm plate camera is a rebranded Ica camera. It was likely built in 1911 based on the type of shutter. This type of shutter is not present in Ica catalogs but can be seen on similar Huttig cameras. It was likely constructed from remnants from the end of the Huttig period. The casing bears the Huttig/Ica logo (which were the same), but the large reflector viewfinder, external protrusion on the front panel, and the presence of the focusing system clearly indicate that it is from the early Ica period. It corresponds to an Ica Atom 51 model.
The shutter is automatic and has a single instantaneous speed plus B and T. The lens is an 'Au Bon Marché Double Anastigmat' with a focal length of 90 mm and a maximum aperture of f/6.8.
